A Persian Rugs Sonnet

persian rugsRecently a rug collector purchased an antique Persian rug. On the underside was an inscription in Farsi in what appears to be the sonnet form, composed with a quatrain, a cdecde scheme and followed by another quatrain, which ties the story together with the end lesson, which the speaker relates to the reader:

Sweet hand knotted area rugs for sale:

A technique passed down over a thousand years

Which other countries have tried, and yet failed

These rugs styles contain oriental tears.

An ancient lover chose one for a girl

She had another who gave her the world

So though she loved this fine area rug

Her cruel husband wouldn’t let it unfurl

He held her in the palm of his hand curled

Until she jumped from a window, lost love.

The moral of this sad and strange true tale

Is to give freedom to the things you love.

If you squeeze too hard, love is sure to fail -

Don’t hang your Persian rugs too high above.

The jealous husband must have prevented her from seeing her paramour and thus the girl, encapsulated in the hand of her lover, felt trapped and committed suicide.Rather gruesome, really. Thankfully today we don’t have such problems.

Area Rugs Can Be For Catnaps

area rugsI remember as a child my father would come exhausted and lie on the area rugs for ten or fifteen minutes. He’d tell me to wake him up and I’d crawl on his belly, or through his snore, pick up an eyelid and watch his hazel eye roll backwards into the socket. He’d whisper still half-asleep, five more minutes, and I’d say “No Dad. Now!” I couldn’t understand why he liked to sleep on the silk Persian rugs.

Now I can. For one, it doesn’t matter where you sleep when you’re really tired. For two, sleeping on hand knotted area rugs ain’t half bad. When you walk into the living room and you feel silk fibers between your toes it makes you want to curl into a ball and close your eyes.For three, those rich colors envelop you and make you feel like you’re home. It’s like an oriental den. Kind of.

So now I’m really sleepy. I stayed out late last night, doing who knows what. First thing I do when I get home is take after the old man: lie down on the area rugs and hit the hay. I just wish I had someone to wake me up.

The Assyrian Prince and His Area Rugs

area rugs In Assyria lived a prince in a castle surrounded by fertile green hills through which a river ran. Beasts walked in tandem and grazed in the pastures by the river. Inside his home were beautiful chambermaids and scientists who developed irrigation systems and musicians with lyres and harps and dancers for his entertainment. And he was reputed to have the finest hand knotted area rugs in the land.

In ancient times it was difficult to acquire area rugs. One had to be a man of great power and wealth. The prince, who claimed ownership to the fertile valley was very happy. Until one day when his friend, an older man who was also his tutor told him that there was much to see in the world. He said that there were even finer area rugs in nearby Lebanon.

The prince was aghast. He could not fathom that there were other places with area rugs as exquisite as his own. He required his old tutor to go with him on a journey to acquire new area rugs. So they left.

Years later, they returned with carts full of area rugs in tow. The prince had seen the world. But when he arrived home and laid his new area rugs next to his old ones, the old ones were still superior. He was dumbfounded.

Online Rugs

Recently I have been a little off put by a lot of the places that you might find oriental rugs for sale. When I look at hand knotted area rugs, I want to admire the work and make decisions about what to purchase, but I do not need to be sold hard on the purchase. If I am going to purchase an area rug, I will know it.

That is why I have taken to doing online rug shopping. It is not that I don’t enjoy touching and smelling the rugs, but given the ability of the web to make commerce easy and less invasive, the trade off is clearly worth it.

I love shopping for everything online so it is no surprise that fine oriental rugs would be the same. The ease with which you can check sizes, colors and styles and the convenience of having the rug delivered to you can not be over stated. I enjoy shopping for area rugs on the web more than I have ever enjoyed shopping for them in the shop. Honestly since I began shopping on through this blog I have never purchased so many rugs. It’s been great for my home and at these great prices easy on my wallet.

A Deep Interest In Area Rugs

I was over a friend’s house recently and could not help but stop everything to admire several silk Persian rugs he had in a few different rooms through out the house. Hors d’œuvres were served while I crawled along the floor of his study searching theintricacies of his hand knotted area rugs, and I love crab cakes. Drinks were poured while I used my camera-phone to photograph the area rug in his sun porch. Champagne might have been nice but I was too drunk off the craftsmanship to bother with it.

This happens to me fairly often. My wife thinks it is crazy how over taken by well crafted area rugs I can be sometimes, though she loved these particularly gorgeous carpets too. I just love a good area rug. I do not have many habits or hobbies but high quality are rugs. I don’t know where this interest stems from or where it is going but I think it’s a great hobby.

My friend and I spent the duration of the evening discussing online rug sales, hand knotting techniques, area rug placement and other rug related topics. It was a thrill to realize that our host just happened to be as serious a rug enthusiast as I was.

Wrapping Yourself In Area Rugs

I remember when I was a small boy I had a green area rug in my bedroom. When my parents weren’t around I would sometimes find myself rolling inside of it like a taquito, an egg roll, or a canoli depending on your appetite. I was shocked by how comfortable it was in there. Honestly I could have stayed nestled in those soft hand knotted area rugs for days, alas Mom didn’t like this idea. Still I have never had trouble appreciating how cozy an area rug can feel under my bare feet. It is truly like walking on sunshine.

My comfort in rooms with area rugs is noteworthy. I feel so much better knowing they are there. Honestly the sound of clomping feet on hard wood get’s me really anxious and tense. Hand knotted area rugs can really make a guy feel at home. For me, it all stems from those long hours in my own bedroom. Snug as a bug, literally in a rug, that was me. I would go back there in an instant if I could. Things were so much simpler when I could just wrap myself in a rug and space out for a few hours. Now I just stand admiring my area rugs to get peace of mind.

The Ideal Rooms For Area Rugs

You know us here at this blog. We love area rugs. Honestly we would put area rugs anywhere. What room is the best for area rugs? Duh, every room! We would throw a few handknotted area rugs in the back yard if it was up to us. Bottom of the pool? Why not?!

Obviously all of that would be insane for people less obsessed with hand knotted rugs than we are. There are certain rooms though that benefit exponentially from the presence of an area rug. The dining room for example. Placing an area rug with the dining room table in the center can be a great way to tie a room together. It creates an awesome pattern that feels very comfy.

Bedrooms also have perfect spaces for area rugs. A smaller one for example in the space not occupied by your essential bedroom furniture(bed, dresser, etc.) is a great way to avoid walking on cold wood floors when running from the bed to the dresser. It can also really make a hallway more hospitable for bare feet.

There are rooms that are simply made for area rugs and then there are those in which you have to get creative. Why not start by slipping an area rug into one of these rooms, we’ll try and convince you of the pool one at a later date.

The Added Comfort Of Handknotted Area Rugs

New apartments are exciting and all that, but they can also feel a little cold. Not physically, though that too(fix the heat already!), but in the vibe the place gives off. A new apartment can just feel empty. You no longer have all of those memories and physical reminders of a past. A new apartment is sort of a blank slate. That’s what you wanted but now you have to fill that empty slate with something that makes you feel better about this new space.

Handknotted Area Rugs are a great place to start! First of all, what better way to fill and define your new space by using area rugs to warm the place up, both physically and in how the place feels emotionally. They look great too. There is no better way to tie a room together than with an area rug. That couch you brought and the love seat your new roommate brought don’t seem to match? The right rug can have them looking like a set in no time!

Oriental Area Rugs are a great way to get friendly with new roommates or just brighten up your first solo apartment. You are a grown up and hard wood floors are simply not enough. It’s time to get serious. It’s time to get rugs.

Online Rug Shopping

I used to hate going to stores and shopping around for big purchases. Especially when those big purchases involved my home design and furnishing. It was impossible to make decisions about those things without making a hundred trips to dozens of different places first. Now I can scan around the internet for whatever I want. What a relief.

I was feeling particularly relieved of shopping duty recently when my girlfriend suggested we get a handknotted area rug for the dinning room. I had never bought a rug before and she seemed so confident in herself. On the internet I was able to bone up on what makes an outstanding area rug as well as shop for one.

There was a time where online rug shopping would have seem like a crazy thing to do. The processes now for receiving and when necessary returning large items ordered on the internet is now so easy though that a major purchase like this can go off with out a hitch. I wouldn’t question the decision to furnish a whole house on the internet, so an area rug is hardly a big deal at all.

After a few hours my girlfriend and I found the perfect one. It looks amazing in our dinning room now and I didn’t have to ride the escalator at Macy’s to get it.

Area Rugs Made With Care

So much of what we have in our homes is mass produced. Our furniture and appliances, the food many of us eat, our reading materials and clothing, it has all been made in huge factories by machines. It seems like our society just doesn’t have room for hand crafted goods anymore. Sad to think about all of the work that used to be done by hand just disappearing. All those years of humans developing skillful ways to craft tools, furniture, clothing, could be lost to time.

All this advancement makes the easy availability of handknotted area rugs all the more special and surprising. Crafting gorgeous Persian rugs from hand is tradition and it is an art form but it is also super easy to take home.  Handcrafted rugs are available at most online rug shops. In fact our friends over at 1 800 Get A Rug have a  fantastic selection.

I love to stand on my hand knotted rugs and think about the life of the people who made them. I consider what it was like developing the skills required to knot an area rug that can fill up a dinning room. I wonder where they learned and if knotting rugs is a family tradition. I wonder if I could do that.
